Ophthalmologist’s Top 5 Tips To Maintain Healthy Vision

People throughout the world are living longer than ever before, making it increasingly important to maintain healthy vision. Taking steps to maintain healthy eyes helps to prevent a host of vision problems that can worsen with age. The Beverly Hills Medical Center – Kuwait boasts some of the most highly respected ophthalmic surgeons, who are dedicated to promoting healthy vision and providing comprehensive care to individuals with vision problems. Our ophthalmologists have put together the top five ways to maintain healthy vision:

    1.     Healthy Food=Healthy Vision

Protecting your eyes starts with the food you eat. Regularly eating these foods can help lead to good eye health:

    ·      Green, leafy vegetables such as spinach

    ·      Salmon, tuna, and other oily fish

    ·      Eggs, nuts, beans and other non-meat protein sources

    ·      Oranges and other citrus fruits or juices

The nutrients contained in these foods (omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and vitamins C and E) have been shown to help prevent age-related vision problems such as macular degeneration and cataracts. Eating a well-balanced diet also helps you maintain a healthy weight, which lowers your risk for type 2 diabetes, the leading cause of blindness in adults.

    2.      Avoid Eye Strain

Staring at a computer for hours, day after day, takes a tole on your eyes. Over time, frequent eye strain from computer or phone use can lead to blurry vision, dry eyes, and difficulty focusing. Minimize eye strain by taking the following steps when using a computer or similar screened device:

    ·      Position your computer so that your eyes are level with the top of the monitor. This allows you to look slightly down at the screen, creating less strain.

    ·      Try to avoid glare on your computer from windows and lights. Use an anti-glare screen if needed.

    ·      Rest your eyes by looking away from the screen occasionally and by getting up to take a 15-minute break every two hours.

    ·      If you wear glasses or contact lens, make sure that your prescription is up to date and adequate for computer use.

    3.      Schedule Regular Eye Exams

An eye examination is used to check the quality of your eye sight, eye pressure, eye muscle coordination, and neurological function. This simple screening provides critical information to the health of your eyes and the presence of certain diseases. Children should receive eye exams at six months, three years, and again before starting school. Adults under the age of 40 should receive an eye exam every two years, while adults over the age of 40 are recommended to receive an annual eye exam. All senior citizens should have an eye examination with an ophthalmologist regularly. This ensures that eye diseases like cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration are detected early and that vision loss can be monitored. At BHMC – Kuwait, we offer comprehensive eye exams to patients of all ages year-round!

    4.      Reduce Your Risk of Cataracts

Cataracts is an eye disease in which the normally clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy, causing impaired vision. Though cataracts commonly develops gradually in old age, several life style factors can significantly increase your risk of developing cataracts early:

    ·      Diabetes

    ·      Smoking

    ·      Extensive ultraviolet light exposure

    ·      Steroid use

    ·      Serious eye injuries

You can help to prevent or delay the onset of cataracts by avoiding the above risk factors. Use sunglasses or wear a hat when outdoors to protect your eyes from damaging ultraviolet rays. Maintain a balanced diet to reduce your risk of diabetes, and abstain from smoking and various drug use that can lead to cataracts. All of these activities promote healthy vision and a healthy lifestyle.

    5.      Contact an Ophthalmologist

Vision loss is discomforting and can negatively impact other areas of your life. Despite taking steps to avoid vision problems, some people experience a decline in eye health as they age. Therefore, it is important to meet with an ophthalmologist to be screened for problems related to the eyes.

At the Beverly Hills Medical Center – Kuwait, we offer state-of-the-art facilities and world-renowned ophthalmologists, experienced in performing a variety of eye procedures with exceptional results.
