    Dr. Jorge L. Alió

    Dr. Jorge L. Alió is the founder and medical director of the Instituto Oftalmologico de Alicante, Spain (now VISSUM Corp.), and founder of the Fundacion Jorrege Alio for the Prevention of Blindness.

    Dr. Alió is globally recognized as a leading authority in the field of refractive surgery, and has authored or edited a total of 61 books. He has written 200 chapters and over 500 articles in peer review journals, and has collaborated on over 200 scientific articles in various media. In addition to his scholarly writings, Dr. Alió holds 36 patents and original designs.

    Since 1997, Dr. Alió has been a professor and chairman of ophthalmology at Miguel Hernandez University in Alicante, Spain. Previously, he held clinical and teaching posts at other Spanish medical institutions including Alicante University, the University General Hospital of Salamanca, and Miguel Servet Hospital of Zaragoza.

    Honored by both national and international organizations, Dr. Alió has received over 30 awards for clinical and research work. In addition, he has participated in hundreds of conferences and scientific meetings. Dr. Alió earned his medical degree and his doctorate in ophthalmology from the Complutense University in Madrid, Spain.

    Dr. Monte A Del Monte, MD, received his undergraduate and medical degrees from John’s Hopkins University in 1974. He completed a complete residency in Pediatrics at the Harvard Boston Children’s Hospital Medical Center and a residency in Ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute where he served as chief resident and assistant chief of service in 1982. He also completed postdoctoral fellowship training in ocular biochemistry and genetics at the Wilmer Institute and in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at the National Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Washington D.C. Dr. Del Monte is board certified in ophthalmology. He is a past member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, past president of the American Orthoptic Council and has served as committee chair of numerous committees on the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, The American Orthoptic Council, the Joint Commission for Allied Health Professionals in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) and the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has lectured and performed Medical Mission teaching and clinical care widely throughout the world with ORBIS and other organizations and has presented 32 invited, guest, keynote and named lectures. He has been director of Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship training at the University of Michigan for the past 26 years training clinical and research fellows from the United States and many countries throughout the world. He has also been medical director of the AOC accredited Orthoptic Training Program at the University of Michigan with program directors Ida Iaccobucci and Bruce Furr. He is an international expert on pediatric cataracts as well as pediatric and adult strabismus and strabismus surgery and has been involved in developing new treatment protocols and surgical techniques; especially for the treatment of cranial nerve palsies, complex strabismus, lost or damaged extraocular muscles and Thyroid Eye Disease. He has also done extensive research in the cell biology and tissue culture of human retinal pigment epithelium, was among the first to report the successful culture of differentiated human Retinal Pigment Epithelium (hRPE) and was involved in the early research involving the biochemistry and culture of other human ocular tissues for the study of inborn errors of metabolism such as cystinosis, muccopolysacharidosis and lipidoses. He is currently Director of of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus, Skillman Professor of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Professor of Pediatrics and Communicable Diseases, all at the University of Michigan, and Director of Pediatric Ophthalmology at the Mott Children’s Hospital.

    Dr. Varma is chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and professor of Ophthalmology and Preventive Medicine. He also serves as director of the USC Eye Institute and holds the Grace and Emery Beardsley Chair in Ophthalmology. Dr. Varma earned his medical degree at the University of Delhi, India. He also obtained a Masters in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. He completed his residency at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and two glaucoma fellowships, one at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, and the other at the University of Southern California. His primary research focuses on epidemiologic studies of eye disease in children and aging populations. Dr. Varma is the principal investigator of the Los Angeles Latino Eye Study (LALES), The Chinese American Eye Study (CHES), the Multi-Ethnic Pediatric Eye Diseases (MEPEDS) Study, and the African American Eye Disease Study (AFEDS). He is an expert on changes in the optic nerve in glaucoma, and is also studying new imaging techniques in the early diagnosis of glaucomatous optic nerve damage. More recently, Dr. Varma has been involved in the development of novel implantable IOP sensors and drainage devices. He has over 247 publications in various peer reviewed ophthalmic journals, and co-authored 2 ophthalmic books.

    Dr. Babak Azizzadeh, Chairman and Director of the Center for Advanced Facial Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, California, is a double-board certified leading international expert in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. His expertise in cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery has made him one of the most sought-after physicians in the industry.

    After graduating from the UCLA School of Medicine with highest honors, Dr. Azizzadeh completed a prestigious six-year residency program in Head and Neck Surgery/Facial Plastic Surgery at UCLA Center for Health Sciences.     Dr. Jimmy S. Firouz serves as a Board Certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon. Although he has a significant amount of experience in multiple areas of plastic surgery, his specialty is breast and body treatments.

    Wendy Lee Oculoplastic SurgeonWendy W. Lee, M.D., M.S.,  specializes in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery with a special interest in aesthetic medicine. Dr. Lee earned her medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a Master of Science degree in physiology from Georgetown University. She completed both her residency and internship at Tulane University, and a fellowship in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

    Dr. Lee treats a broad spectrum of oculoplastic disorders, including eyelid cancers, trauma, tearing disorders, eyelid malpositions, orbital tumors, and infection and inflammation of the lids and orbit. In addition, as director of the Bascom Palmer Aesthetic Center, Dr. Lee provides a full range of cosmetic services, including blepharoptosis surgery; blepharoplasty of the upper and lower lids; brow and forehead lifts; and non-surgical cosmetic enhancements including botulinum toxin treatments, dermal fillers, and photorejuvenation. She also performs laser skin resurfacing to rejuvenate the face, neck, hands and eyelids, all performed at the institute’s aesthetic center.

    Dr. Lee dedicates time to the teaching of residents, fellows, medical students and community physicians.  She is co-director of UM Cosmetic Medicine, a multidisciplinary cosmetic group involving the departments of ophthalmology, dermatology, ENT and plastic surgery.  Together with her colleagues she organizes multispecialty trainings in cosmetic injectables, topical treatments and lasers.
