    Learn about Retinal Disease

The retina is a highly complex, light-sensitive membrane located at the back of the eye that converts the light that enters the eye through the pupil into electrical impulses that are then translated by the brain. As a delicate but essential component of the eye, when a condition affects retinal function, it may interfere with the retina’s ability to process visual information or even threaten an individual’s total eyesight.

At the Beverly Hills Medical Center of Kuwait, our ophthalmologists specialize in diagnosing and treating retinal diseases with the most effective and state-of-the-art technology available to prevent or repair retinal damage and protect our patients’ eyesight as much as possible.

The Many Types of Retinal Diseases

There are numerous conditions that may interfere with retinal function and interfere with eyesight or lead to vision loss or blindness. If you are experiencing issues with your eyesight, it is crucial to have your vision examined by an experienced ophthalmologist to ensure that the condition does not progress and can be treated right away. Common types of retinal diseases include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Retinal Tears and Detachment – The retinal membrane can tear and/or become detached from surrounding tissue can occur, particularly when the vitreous, clear gel in the center of the eye shrinks or condenses.
    • Macular Degeneration – The macula (main part of the retina) begins to weaken and degenerate, resulting in blurred vision, blind spots, or loss of vision.
    • Macular Hole – Whether due to injury or degeneration, the macula (main part of the retina) begins to stretch, creating a hole in the delicate tissue.
    • Diabetic Retinopathy – The tiny blood vessels surrounding the retina begin to leak fluid as a result of diabetes, causing the membrane to swell.
    • Epiretinal Membrane – A membrane grows over the retina and interferes with retinal function, making the eyesight blurry.
    • Cystoid Macular Edema – The macula swells with protein and develops cysts or fluid-filled lumps

Fortunately, there are numerous treatments available to address a wide variety of conditions and diseases that damage the retina. Many retinal surgeries and treatments rely on lasers to carefully prevent further issues or correct vision. The surgeons at Beverly Hills Medical Center of Kuwait are proud to offer effective surgical treatment options for retinal diseases, such as vitrectomy, scleral buckling, and pnuematic retinoplexy.
