Pink Eye and Blepharitis: Common Symptoms and Treatments
Eye infections can seriously affect your quality of life, that’s why it’s important to have annual eye exams by the world renowned Kuwait eye doctors at BHMC Kuwait and inform yourself in the event of eye symptoms. Two common eye infections are pink eye and blepharitis.
Pink eye, otherwise known as conjunctivitis, is a common eye condition that’s the result of eye irritation. It is highly contagious and is usually contracted by children due to their close proximity to one another. There are many different types and many ways it can be contracted.
Blepharitis, on the other hand, is eye inflammation that’s usually the result of excess bacteria that can be found on the skin, an oil gland blockage in the eyelid, and even allergies.
Pink Eye: Types, Symptoms, and Treatment
There are many types of conjunctivitis but the most common are:
· Bacterial pink eye – Produces pus/mucus and normally infects one eye, but it can spread to both.
· Viral pink eye – Out of all the types of pink eye, this is probably the most contagious because it produces a large amount of discharge, which can, in turn, infect the other eye and other people.
· Allergic pink eye – This is an allergic reaction to an outside agent that induces tearing, itching, and eye redness in both eyes. At times, it can also be responsible for a runny nose.
Pink eye can be the result of many different factors, including bacteria, a virus, chemicals, allergies, or other causes. It’s important to note that STDs, like gonorrhea and chlamydia, can also cause pink eye.
In general, conjunctivitis is a redness and/or swelling of the mucus membrane that lines the eye. It usually goes away within seven to 10 days with medical treatment. A Kuwait eye doctor like Dr. Zein will prescribe medicinal eye drops and eye ointment that should be used as directed.
Blepharitis: Symptoms and Treatment
Blepharitis has a number of symptoms that include:
· Burning
· Light sensitivity
· Redness
· Eye swelling
· Blurry vision
· Eye crusting
· Feeling like something is in your eye
· Dry eyes
Unfortunately, blepharitis is not curable. That said, it can be treated and managed with proper consultation and eye hygiene. It’s important to treat blepharitis as soon as possible because, if it is left untreated, it can cause eye scarring and eye tissue injury. If you have blepharitis, it’s important to follow these steps:
1. Place a damp, warm washcloth over the eyes in five-minute increments. This will soften any crusting around the eyes.
2. Dilute baby shampoo or soap by 50%, apply to a warm, damp washcloth, and gently clean each closed eye using horizontal strokes.
3. Rinse thoroughly with a clean, warm, damp washcloth and then pat dry.
Kuwait eye doctors say you can prevent contracting blepharitis by keeping your hands and face clean, not rubbing your eyes with dirty towels or dirty fingers, and removing all eye makeup before going to sleep.
