    How to Avoid Dry Eyes

Dry eye syndrome can be caused by a variety of factors, including environmental issues and lifestyle choices. Luckily, the condition can be avoided through some simple measures, both at home and on the go. The following actions can help reduce the amount of itchiness and discomfort felt by sufferers of dry eye syndrome.

Pay attention to the air in your home

Many cases of dry eye syndrome are caused by an inadequate amount of moisture in our homes. If there is no moisture in the air, our eyes quickly grow dry and itchy. Try to avoid using the heater or being close to other sources of hot air (such as blow dryers or heat lamps). Additionally, try to avoid having any type of air blown directly into your eyes. Regardless of whether the air is hot or cold, it will quickly dry the eyes and lead to discomfort.

If your home has air that is dry, try investing in a humidifier, a device which adds moisture to dry indoor air. Believe us, your eyes will thank you for it!

Reduce the time spent staring at screens

Computer vision syndrome is a condition that develops during frequent computer use. It often results in blurry vision, eyestrain, headaches, and dry eyes. When we spend a lot of time on the computer, we tend to blink less, depriving our eyes of much-needed moisture. In order to minimize their risk of dry eyes due to computer use, try taking the following steps next time you’re using the computer:

    • Position the computer screen below eye level
    • Take a break periodically and blink your eyes repeatedly

These simple steps can greatly reduce the risk of computer-related dry eye syndrome.

    Be aware of your environment

Dry eye syndrome can affect people of any age in any environment, but those who live at high altitudes and dry areas are more likely to suffer from the condition. Airplanes are notorious for having stuffy air, and because they operate at such high altitudes, they contain air that is often extremely dry. If you’re travelling long distances in an airplane, be sure to close your eyes frequently. Doing so will conserve eye moisture and lessen tear evaporation.

    Stop smoking

When someone quits smoking, they are essentially receiving a new lease on life. It’s no secret that smoking can damage your lungs and skin, but did you know that smoking can also cause dry eye syndrome? Even if you don’t smoke yourself, being around smokers can worsen dry eye symptoms. If you need help quitting smoking, just ask one of our doctors. We’ll help devise you a strategy to quit smoking and live a longer, healthier life without dry eyes.
