Femto-LASIK for Children
Femto-LASIK, a bladeless surgical procedure used to improve vision and reduce dependence on glasses or contacts, has traditionally been reserved for adults. However, a recent study suggests that Femto-LASIK could be a viable treatment option for children as young as 8 years old. While long-term effectiveness is yet to be established, it is possible that Femto-LASIK may soon be available to an entirely new category of patients.
The Femto-LASIK surgical procedure involves bladeless technology to reshape the cornea of the eye and improve vision. The femtosecond laser is an ultra-fast, high-precision system which places millions of laser spots at a specified depth under the surface of the eye. The laser is used to create a flap in the cornea which improves the way the eye focuses light rays onto the retina, capable of restoring 20/20 (natural) vision. This procedure is both highly effective and safe for patients.
The Beverly Hills Medical Center – Kuwait offers the most advanced bladeless Femto-LASIK technology in the world. Our opthalmology department boasts some of the most highly respected ophthalmic surgeons who are dedicated to providing unique and comprehensive care to individuals with vision problems.
The Study – Femto-LASIK in Children
The age candidacy trial explored Femto-LASIK for children. It involved 25 children, with a mean age of 13.8 years, who experienced poor eyesight and an intolerance to contact lenses. Additionally, many of the children participated in high-level or contact athletics. After the Femto-LASIK procedure, all of the participants in the study reported minimal dry eye complications, very little discomfort, and highly improved vision.
Is Femto-LASIK for children a safe and predictable alternative? It may still be too early to suggest that children are good candidates for Femto-LASIK (bladeless) surgery. However, as more studies are conducted over time, Femto-LASIK may prove to be an acceptable solution for children requiring vision correction.
Who is a Good Candidate for Femto-LASIK Surgery?
Ophthalmologists at the Beverly Hills Medical Center – Kuwait currently suggest that patients undergoing Femto-LASIK surgery be at least 18 years of age, in good heath, and free of eye diseases. To ensure optimal results, patients should have held a stable eye prescription for at least one year before receiving Femto-LASIK surgery. The majority of patients who meet these criteria, and who are willing to diligently protect their eyes during several weeks of recovery, experience a dramatic improvement in vision.
