Corneal Ring Implants with Femtosecond
Thanks to the advent of new and exciting technologies, people who suffer from eye disorders have many options for fixing their condition. Whether they suffer from nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or anything else, patients can choose from a wide variety of treatment methods to help relieve them from their eye conditions. One of these new technologies is the implantation of corneal rings in the eyes, which is used to correct myopia in patients.
At the Beverly Hills Medical Center of Kuwait, our surgeons are experts in performing procedures on the eye. Using advanced and state-of-the-art technologies, our doctors provide patients with the best and most effective care possible in a comfortable and high-tech facility.
What is a Corneal Ring Implant?
Intrastromal corneal rings (also known as intracorneal rings) are small rings implanted in the eye to correct vision. Normally, these rings are used to treat people who suffer from myopia, also known as nearsightedness. Traditionally, corneal rings are implanted after a surgeon makes small incisions in the eye with a steel blade. Thanks to femtosecond laser technology, however, this process has become safer, easier, and more exact than ever before.
During femtosecond-assisted cornea ring implant surgery, surgeons use the ultra-precise femtosecond laser to make incisions in the patient’s cornea. In addition to being completely bladeless, this method has many benefits over traditional corneal ring implant surgery. During the surgery, the femtosecond laser tracks and follows the movements of the eye as well as the specific shape of a patient’s cornea, allowing for an operation that is unique tailored to each individual patient. The result is a procedure which is not only safer than conventional surgery, but more accurate as well.
What to Expect from a Corneal Ring Implantation Procedure
At the Beverly Hills Medical Center of Kuwait, our doctors do everything possible to make our patients feel comfortable and at ease during their procedure. This includes everything before, during, and after surgery. To make things easier for our patients, our doctors recommend that patients about to undergo corneal ring implantation stop wearing their contacts in the days leading up to their procedure. Since contacts can affect the shape of the cornea, our doctors would like the cornea to return back to its normal shape before beginning the procedure.
During the surgery, patients are given local anesthesia. After making small incisions on the eye using a femtosecond laser, doctors will implant the corneal rings in the proper position on the eye, one on each side of the pupil. These rings will flatten the cornea and change the refraction of light into the eye.
At Beverly Hills Medical Center Kuwait, corneal ring implantation is performed as an outpatient procedure. Since patients will experience eye sensitivity in the days following the operation, it’s recommended that patients be accompanied by a friend who can drive them home after the procedure. After a few days or weeks, the irritation of the eye will subside, allowing patients to fully experience the joy of their new and improved vision.
